super bowl power outage. eyewitness news starts now. hi. i'm kai jackson. and i'm mary bubala. here's what people are talking b. >> that's right. a massive, possibly historic blizzard is poised to dump possibly feet of snow from new york to maine. the dangerous winter storm could bring winds up to 75 miles per hour. in connecticut alone, a state of emergency is already in effect. and the snow is beginning to accumulate on roads as well as sidewalks. people are being warned to stay inside and off the roads. further north, light snow is falling in massachusetts, where they are expected to get the brunt of this storm. amtrak is suspending its northeast corridor service between newark and boston. that's going to affect thousands of people. and airlines have canceled thousands of flights through tomorrow. here at home, that same storm system is bringing us

rain. wjz is live with first warning weather coverage. meteorologist tim williams and bob turk are tracking this large system. >> large and really, really going to be a very, very disastrous storm in some locations. look at this on radar. looks like a hurricane actually. it's a deep area of low pressure, well offshore now. heading up toward eastern section, new england off nantucket. right now, it's 32 off boston. they have wet snow there. 33 in providence. new york around 33 degrees. they're getting a heavy, wet snow, this is going to bring power lines down in that region. for you, a little light band of shower activity. maybe snow flakes coming in the next hour or two. for us, generally what we're looking at are wind issues, later on late tonight through tomorrow morning. wednesday's storm wraps up. we could get wind gusts overnight into tomorrow morning. but it's been mild. still 42 degrees here. the only really cooler spots out to the west, where there may be accumulations out in the mountain areas. might see some flurry

activities here. really don't expect much in the way of accumulation. the ground is pretty wet. and right now, it's pretty warm. tim has a look at the utback and the storm -- outback and this storm. >> as bob mentioned, the moisture is moving the real punch, the bulk of it is moving up new england offshore. we have been watching the northerly portion that moved across the great lakes. and the one that moved up the shore earlier. they're all starting to meet now. it's going to cause the travel shutdowns and definitely potential problems for areas as far in as just around new jersey and up the coast. but we're looking at roughly 6 to 12 inches around new york. then up to about 3 feet of snow up around the providence area, just up near boston. that is why this storm is considered so historic. they get a lot of snow there, but not in this amount in this type of timing so quickly. it's going to hit them tonight. certainly, nothing as big a

problem for us. we're looking at some rain and flurry activity before the night is out. bob will have your updated first warning forecast and so will i. as tim said and the national weather service says, this type of storm doesn't come along that often in that area. first warning weather coverage continues. marley hall reports for wjz, from harford, connecticut. >> reporter: the icy sleet that hit new york city is turning into a full-blown snowstorm this evening. by tomorrow, new york could be buried under a foot of snow. >> keep moving. that's how new york is. >> reporter: another storm from the northwest, creating a wintry do you believe--- double- whammy. coastal residents still recovering from super storm sandy, are preparing for hurricane force winds and surges. residents started to clear the first few inches of snow this afternoon. they're expecting two feet.

connecticut's governor declared a state of emergency. >> do yourself and the state a favor and stay off the highways. >> reporter: some gas stations in connecticut ran out of fuel as people prepared for the storm. here in harford, people are filling gas cans to run their generators, in case their power goes out. >> reporter: ed hernandez filled up his power truck today. >> running now. looking at 60, plus 100 yesterday. >> reporter: parts of massachusetts, including boston, could get 3 feet of snow. >> we expect up to 2 to 3 inches of accumulation per hour, making for extremely dangerous conditions. >> reporter: in maine, the stormy weather caused a 19-car pileup, with no serious injuries. >> reporter: amtrak trains stopped running north of new york city today. many airports across new england of shut down. and thousands of flights are canceled. in harford, connecticut, marley hall, wjz eyewitness news. >> and wjz is always on. for weather watches and

warnings in -- and your updated first warning forecast, log onto cbsbaltimore.com any time. robert gladden is accused of shooting a fellow student at perry hall high. gladden was 15 years old when he was arrested. today, a judge decides if he should be tried as a juvenile or an adult. vic is in the newsroom with more. >> gladden will be charged in the attempted first-degree murder at the cafeteria at perry hall high school. it happened august 27th. prosecutors say gladden fired a shotgun at a lunch table, where several students were sitting. 17-year-old daniel borowy was sitting there. the lawyer says he needs mental health treatment, not imprisonment. >> daniel borowy is back at school. the manhunt continues for dorner. he is the ex-cop wanted for shooting and killing several people.

misare fighting the bitter cold and the chilling fact that dorner may also be hunting for them. >> reporter: police are checking cars in a snowstorm east of los angeles for accused killer christopher dorner. his burned-out pickup truck was found in the big bear area on thursday. s.w.a.t. teams are using snowcaps to reach remote areas. >> it's about 8 square miles is what we're searching. there's about 200 empty cabins that we're going to check, one by one, using our s.w.a.t. guys. >> reporter: the former lapd officer and navy reservist is wanted for murdering three people, including one police officer. in a rambling manifesto, posted online, dorner declared war on law enforcement. >> extremely dangerous. i explained to them to be very careful. but our folks are highly trained. >> reporter: the lapd fired dorner in 2008. he accused a fellow officer of using excessive force in the field. but the department ruled dorner was lying. police say dorner's first victims were monica kwan and

her fawnsz. she's the daughter of the lapd who represented dorner during his disciplinary hearings. authorities are now guarding dozens of potential targets listed on dorner's manifesto. they're not certain the 33-year- old suspect is still in the big bear area. and admit the burned-out truck could be an elaborate diversion, or a trap. bigad shaban, wjz eyewitness news. >> and southern california police are searching. police have found the body of a 2-year-old child in a land fill. 25-year-old chelsea booth is charmed in the first- and second-degree murder in the death of her daughter cassidy. police found the body after searching 25 tons of trash. booth is being held without bail. we now know the cause of the super bowl power outage. the new orleans utility entergy

says an incorrect setting on a relay is to blame. it cut lights to about half the stadium for thor minutes, -- 34 minutes, halting play between the baltimore ravens and the san francisco 49ers. hi, everyone. well, we are starting out with a lot of accidents there. trouble on 95 southbound. if you're traveling in that direction, we have an accident there at emerton road. other accidents include northbound richie highway at route 100. east patapsco at 9th street. york road at east northern parkway. and/or in reisterstown, franklin boulevard, at niko derm road. as far as delays are concerned, if you're traveling on the loop. it goes around to liberty road. and on the top side of the inner loop, still going to see a lot of brake lights in that direction. traffic begins to slow down from providence road and goes over to harford. let's take a live look. you can see, heavy traffic there, that's the inner loop at security boulevard. and we'll take a look at 695,

well, sisters turn a florida police station into a dance floor. the tourists from canada were arrested for public intoxication. that's when the women say they were roughed up by police. but the video -- the video shows them dancing. the judge fined the women and ordered them to serve community service. the officers are being cleared. okay. well, even snow plows sometimes succumb to bad weather. virginia state police say a driver in bedford county escaped some serious injury this morning when a snow plow ran off the road and flipped over. 2% say the plow was removing snow from the shoulder of the road when the blade hit a soft spot. as the tire sank, the driver lost control. the driver ran, as we see, off the road. this valentine's day, we won't have to kiss ourselves goodbye. that's because anast roadway will come very close on october 15th. as alex demetrick reports, it

aol is reporting its first quarterly revenue growth in eight years. and quarterly profits that linked in, soared past wall street estimates. sources have nearly tripled since going public in the spring of 2011. the trade deficit fell nearly 21% in december to $26 billion. exports rose, while oil imports plunge. a narrower trade gap helps boost growth. because it means more companies spent overseas. the u.s. postal service lost $1.3 billion from october to december. capping a record year for the agency. earlier this week, the postal service said it would end saturday mail deliveries this summer. though it will continue to deliver packages six days a week. and mcdonald's said sales fell again last month. because of drops in demand and

we are at 41 degrees. average for this date is 43. 41 now. and we have 38 is your dew point. relative humidity at 88. northwest winds at 7 miles per hour. still keeping the cooler air over us. clouds most of the day. 29.74 your barometer reading. 36 now in cumberland and oakland. 42 on the shore. we have 39 over toward easton. 37 in rock hall. you see the temperatures are dropping. but coming down out of that 40- degree high or so. we are still in the mild air. so that mild air is going to dictate anything that comes down over the next few hours. even though we may get just a few flurries on the back edge of this storm. and it's moving up into new england. right now, the winds are coming in, settling from the northwest around 7 miles per hour. 15 in d.c. 13 from the northeast in elkton. we'll start to see the winds pick up. we have a wind advisory in effect from 9:00 a.m. tomorrow, through 6:00 p.m. and that's going to be really for the state. and that's going to be the storm moving out, high pressure trying to build in.

we'll actually have nice, clear conditions tomorrow. but the winds will definitely pick up. around the area, well, we're in the 40s. we have 50s and 60s down to our south and southwest. 20s up toward detroit. that is the direction that the colder portion of the storm took. and that picked up some of the colder air. that could wrap around it as it starts to move away. but moisture is moving up and into new england. we're really missing any of that. as it starts to move in here, the last little bit, temperatures will drop, which means it will keep a flurry in the forecast. for the most part, we are not going to see anything too measurable out of this. we will see clearing for tomorrow and sunday. next chance of rain comes on monday. and that will be again a rain event. temperature around 50 degrees. high tide at fort mchenry. next at 5:16. gale warning in effect tonight. overnight lows down around 29 degrees. couple of showers around. if they come in while the temperatures are still dropping, we could see a flurry. mostly sunny and windy tomorrow.

about. >> new york city and new england are under a blizzard warning. our first warning weather coverage continues. randall pinkston reports for wjz. the big apple could see upwards of a foot or snow or more. >> wet snow and sleet are creating a midday mess in manhattan, as the big apple waits for what could be a foot of snow or more. >> 6 to 10? i think a pretty good estimate. and then 10 to 15, in and around the city. the city right on that line. >> reporter: new york city plows and salt trucks are armed and ready to clear the city's almost 6,000 miles of roads. the storm will also bring higher tides. >> many of the same communities that were inundated by hurricane sandy's tidal surge, just about a hundred days ago, are likely to see moderate coastal flooding this evening. >> reporter: mainland new yorkers are hoping to get home early this evening before the blizzard arrives. then there are the tourists, stuck in the storm, looking for a good time. >> reporter: doug watson and his wife came from charlotte,

north carolina. canceled flights kept some family members from joining them. but they have plans. >> we have tickets for a show tonight. we're hoping we can make it over there and back. >> you think the show is going to go on? >> we're hopeful. we haven't heard anything otherwise yet. >> we're down here for a show. and we had nonrefundable tickets. so -- >> you're the second person i met who said they're here for a show. now, there's supposed to be a blizzard tonight. what are you hearing? is the show going to go on? >> i hope so. the show always goes on, right? >> reporter: even if the blizzard is close, the city should put on quite a show of its own. here at home, it's cloudy, with average temperatures. our area could still see some snow from this storm. where is the storm now? will it have any impact on maryland? live first warning weather coverage continues with meteorologist tim williams and bob turk. >> take a look at the center of

the storm. off the jersey coast and heading up toward cape cod. nantucket area. temperatures are kind of marginal affect. boston at 32, getting wet snow. but providence now at 33. and harford at 30. that's where the snow rain line is. new york jumped to 34. getting a mixture of mainly wet snow. in our region, a little band of bright shower activity going through. but air temperatures are still at 41 degrees. now, the only real impact we're going to have is once this storm really winds up later tonight, that's when new england really will see the band. really, really blizzard conditions. we'll have strong winds from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., across northern sections. a wind advisory will be in effect. temperature-wise, 41 here. a little cooler out to the west. snow shower activity on the mountains. may see small accumulation. may see flurries later on. but primarily, looking at things drying up, long after midnight. we'll see sun coming back for the weekend. but new england has a really horrible storm headed their way. even worse than it is now. tim has a look at the impact

they'll have from new york to maine. >> sort of all merged, definitely north and northeast of us. so really, we got the moisture out of it. especially on the eastern shore. but as it meets that cold air, well, these are the amounts they're expecting to see. 3 to 6 inches as you start to head up the jersey coast line. 6 to 12 inches around new york. and as you head toward providence. lookingald up to 2 feet to maybe 3 feet plus. that's why this is considered historic. travel is definitely going to shut down. significant delays. we're already seeing that across the country because of the flight trying to make their way in or out of the new england area. we're going to see this through tonight into tomorrow. things clear out definitely for us. we'll have your complete first warning forecast coming up in a few moments. now back inside. >> wjz is always on. for weather watches and warnings and your updated first warning forecast. log onto cbs baltimore. com any time. new court hearings are adding to the mystery in the

chandra levy case. the native was working as an intern in washington, when she disappeared in may in 2001. brian todd has more on the secret meetings. >> reporter: a case that many of us thought had ended more than two years ago, is revived in mysterious court hearings. the man convicted in 2010 of murdering washington intern chandra levy. ingmar guandique is brought back to washington, d.c. superior court, displaying a large tattoo, covering his scalp. this is the fourth hearing in more than a month. and the court has kept back despite legal appeals from the media. >> we're disappointed with the court leaving in place, essentially, blanket secrecy. >> reporter: secrecy that could last for months. legal experts say the judge has a concern for safety of someone involved in the case. no one is allowed to say who. >> this was a terrible crime of violence. the witnesses have histories of violence. so there could be violence

threatened against any number of people, participants or each outsiders to the case. >> reporter: levy, an intern with the bureau of prisons, disappeared in may 2001. her remains weren't found until a year after her disappearance. prosecutors say guandique killed levy in a park in washington. he's repeatedly denied involvement. the case generated a swarm of media coverage. in part because it was revealed chandra levy had had an affair with then-congressman gary condit. condit testified at guandique's trial but denied having to do -- anything to do with levery's disappearance. >> this has to do with reliability from a government witness. >> armando morales testified that guandique testified to him in jail that he killed levy. but it's not clear if morales is the witness whose testimony is in question. >> although he denied

involvement, guandique was sentenced to 60 years in prison in 2011. several e-mail accounts owned by members of the bush family are hacked. someone accessed not only e- mails between both former presidents, but private photos, telephone numbers, and addresses. the e-mails and photos were then published on a gossip website. a spokesperson for former president george h.w. bush says the family is not commenting because the issue is under investigation. popular politician. it appears people in new jersey like the job governor chris christie is doing. a new poll shows his approval rating is 73%. earlier this week, the focus wasn't on his political performance but rather his weight. he lashed out at a former white house doctor who said his weight would present a serious health risk. christie said he is working to lose weight and has a plan in place. the number of mothers choosing to breast-feed their babies is on the rise in this

country. kai has more on a new report just released on that subject. kai? >> reporter: that's right. a new report shows more u.s. moms are breast-feeding. but overall, rates are still low. from 2000 to 2008. the number of mother whose breast-fed their infants rose. the number of moms who continued breast-feeding jumped nearly 10%. however, the cdc cautions, more mothers still need to breast- feed. african american mothers still have the lowest rate of continual breast-feeding at 58%, even though they increase their overall breast-feeding rate by 13%. vic? >> kai, thank you. the cdc says breastmilk can provide powerful antibodies. a new bill would prevent people on food stamps from buying junk food and energy drinks. the usda says there has been a 2.9% increase on people in the program from last year. new questions involving

boeing 787 airliners. a top investigator says the government should reassess its approval of lithium batteries. they doubt whether the airline's trouble can be fixed quickly. it could add weight to the plane. and fuel efficiency is one of the top selling points. there is good news, however the faa has approved critical test problems. if you're waiting for someone to get home, let's check on the roads with kristy breslin. >> well, definitely not clear on the beltway. traveling on the west side inner loop, you're looking at 295. all the way around liberty road. traffic moving at this point around 25 miles per hour. top side inner loops are also slow in that direction over to harford. we're also looking at significant delays it's outer loop from reisterstown road to 70, due to an earlier accident.

dozens of aftershocks strike the island, days after it was hit with a tsunami. after after-- an aftershock struck. the quake triggered tsunami waves that were as high as 5 feet. it's estimated that 15 villagers -- villages, rather, and up to 7,000 people have been affected. malala yousufzai, the pakistani teenager who was targeted by the taliban, is out of the hospital today. >> malala has undergone surgery

to reconstruct her skull and restore her hearing. they placed a custom made plate over a hole in her skull and fit her for a cochlear impant. the militant group says they attacked her because she spoke out against their policy of ganning girls from going to school. malala says she'll keep campaigning for female education. and she's, quote, getting better, day boy day. vic, back to you. >> mary, thank you. malala will continue her rehabilitation at her family's temporary home in birmingham. an ohio man dies, trying to save the life of a boy, who fell into a frozen lake in ohio. the man saw the boy crawl in and onto his stomach to reach him. both plunged back into the frigid waters. dive crews rushed to the scene and pulled the 30-year-old man and the 5-year-old boy from the water. the adult that went in to

you get just fill out this thing and send it in. and we look through every one of them. ask they're all scams. >> reporter: he was about to share personal financial information on what he thought was a secure government website, called fafsa. free application for federal government aid. turns out he hit the wrong website. >> i went onto fafsa.com. and that is not the fafsa website. that is a website for a company that charges you money to fill out the fafsa for you. inside this is is a population scammers will prey upon. you shouldn't have to pay money to get money. >> reporter: it's a common mistake says kim, who counsels parents for pheaa. she says there are really two legitimate online sites. the main is fafsa.

all right. cloudy skies. a little rain just moved through the region. but temperatures have been all day long, above freezing. in fact, very few spots saw anything below freezing. just a little bit of northern california. northern baltimore county. northern harford saw just a touch of sleet. a few wet snowflakes. that was about it. temperatures still mild. still at 41 degrees. and more importantly, the dew point is up at 38. above freezing even in the cloud layer, it's relatively mild. dew point.

humidity, 88%. northwest ainds -- winds at 87. and temperature will go down. dew point will come down there may be snow showers later tonight. locally, may see a few flakes later on. 42 in ocean city. 39, easton. 41 in the 30s to the west. still above freezing as you can see. but the dew point is still rather high. it's got to get down below 32. for us to see any flakes reach the ground. 40 westminster. a little schooler by the bay. up in bel air, it's 39. right now, the winds not all that strong. but later tonight, they will get stronger. across the northern tier. we have a wind advisory, beginning at 9:00 tonight. wind gusts later tonight and tomorrow. could get over 30, maybe 40 miles an hour. could be a windy but sunny day tomorrow. this will clear out. 14 out in western maryland. you can see all the warnings.

northeast pa. under the winter storm warnings and blizzard warnings. simply what that means is visibility down below quarter mile. sustained winds of 35 miles per hour. you can have one inch of snow and still have a blizzard. they have those out in the midwest, great plains. this point, 6 to 10, 12, inches of snow. i'm not sure how much will be blowing around. but they have blizzard warnings tomorrow. 41 here. 32 in boston. marginal temps. colder air to the north. 19, winnipeg. cold, arctic winter air has retreated. that will be with us, moving in over early next week. the storm, very well defined. wrapped up and moving offshore now. heading up toward new england, with snow inland. as you can see, rain along the coastal areas. rain in new jersey. rain and snow now in the new york region. that's where the blizzard area is going to be. massachusetts, rhode island, connecticut. southern new hampshire and portions of maine. and from new york area, north and east. winds tomorrow, picking up to
